    E3 2012: Tomb Raider Demo

Crystal Dynamics showed off new Tomb Raider footage at Microsoft's 2012 press conference. The playable demo showed Lara Croft sneak up on enemies in a mountainous town and use a bow and arrow to shoot at them from behind cover, then use zip lines to travel quickly from area to area.

Later in the demo she used fire arrow to light explosives and clear out larger numbers of enemies. The action was very fast-paced as Lara battled against foes, and transitioned smoothly between third-person action scenes and perilous situations where she would dangle from cliffs and slide down mountainside rivers.

The finale showed Lara tumbling from a high ledge and a the last moment deploying a parachute. She drifted through trees, knocking into a few, before crashing to the ground.

The New, Sympathetic, Beaten Up Lara Croft: You'll 'Want to Protect' Her

    Tomb Raider Reborn, Kimilicious, Jun 14, 2012, 2:11 AM, YourPSHome.net, jpg, Tomb-Raider-Lara-Bloody.jpg

"When you see her have to face these challenges, you start to root for her in a way that you might not root for a male character. They're more like 'I want to protect her.'"

That's Tomb Raider Executive Producer Ron Rosenberg, explaining the emotional connection the game hopes to make with the player. He said as much to Kotaku and, while his words may seem like typical pre-release hype coming from a less-than partial observer, I'm going to take him at his word.

We've seen her get impaled, beaten mercilessly, kidnapped and nearly raped. We've seen her lose her best friend. And maybe it's just typical video game fare (and good sound design), but some of the falls she takes just seem so… visceral.

"She is literally turned into a cornered animal. It's a huge step in her evolution: she's forced to either fight back or die."

Tomb Raider's Studio Says There's No Attempted Rape Scene After They Say It Does

    Tomb Raider Reborn, Kimilicious, Jun 14, 2012, 3:54 AM, YourPSHome.net, jpg, tomb-raider.jpg

Crystal Dynamics said their upcoming re-imagining the Lara Croft franchise attempts to bring some realism to the series, but then falls to the overlords of PR and denies that it's that real.

Tomb Raider Executive Producer Ron Rosenberg spoke to Kotaku Tuesday about the title set for release in March of next year and how it attempts to humanize the game heroine by making her less of an idealized sex symbol to a teenage boy and more of a real, vulnerable person who can create a greater emotional connection with players.

He described Lara as a trapped animal, fighting for survival who's unsure of herself at times and even downright scared in situations that would reduce the steeliest of men into blubbering, crying balls of flesh. He even described the situations that Lara gets in from the usual dangerous scrapes to an attempted rape at the hand of her captors that leads to her first killing of another human being.

The studio's chief Darrell Gallagher didn't take kindly to that description and issued a statement on the official Tomb Raider website denying that any such scene takes place.

"One of the character defining moments for Lara in the game, which has incorrectly been referred to as an 'attempted rape' scene is the content we showed at this year's E3 and which over a million people have now seen in our recent trailer entitled 'Crossroads'. This is where Lara is forced to kill another human for the first time. In this particular section, which there is a threatening undertone in the sequence and surrounding drama, it never goes any further than the scenes that we have already shown publicly. Sexual assault of any kind is categorically not a theme that we cover in this game."

Kotaku responded to the statement with a word-for-word recap of Rosenberg's interview regarding the scene: "And then what happens is her best friend gets kidnapped, she gets taken prisoner by scavengers on the island. They try to rape her…"

I'm impressed with this re-boot of a classic. She looks so much more realistic. The game seems t have allot more action and grit then the past titles. I cant wait to pick this game up.

Tomb Raider sequel already mapped out, hints Crystal Dynamics

'I have to be careful because I know exactly where Lara's going' says brand director.

    Tomb Raider Reborn, May 26, 2012, 4:11 AM, YourPSHome.net, 6928

Crystal Dynamics' global brand director Karl Stewart has suggested that a second Tomb Raider game could already be in pre-production, despite the reboot title still being nine months away from release.

"I have to be careful because I know exactly where she's going," Stewart said when asked by VideoGamer.com what the future may hold for Lara beyond next year's game.

"You have to look at the future, you have to look at where... It's not just one game," he continued.

"At the end of this game we want her to be that strong female character that is willing to go and seek out mysteries and seek out tombs. She's going to be going to plenty of tombs in this game, but we're going to have somebody who wants to go on that adventure, who wants to be the person that she now is. That's the goal."

Stewart wouldn't be pushed for any more details on the unannounced sequel, though.

"I don't want to say anymore on it because I'll have the game director of the next game going 'what the duck are you saying!?'"

As well as Tomb Raider, Crystal Dynamics is rumoured to be working on two more games.

One of them is a next-gen new IP. The other, though, we know very little about, beyond being headed up by ex-God of War director Cory Barlog.

Could Barlog already be working on a Tomb Raider sequel?

In the same interview, Stewart told us that the game's recent 'rape' controversy was "unfortunate", but argued that "90 per cent of people who reported on it didn't actually see the game".

It was also revealed this morning that English actress Camilla Luddington would be providing the voice for Lara in the new game.
Tomb Raider launches on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC on March 5, 2013.

The Final Hours of Tomb Raider
Are you ready for some big news? Geoff Keighley has chosen to explore the nuances of Tomb Raider in his third “Final Hours” installment. Leading up to TR’s March 5 launch, Keighley will be revealing the key creative talent on the team, as well as diving deep into development through the interactive journalism series.
“The Final Hours series documents the creative process behind today’s most anticipated games, with a particular focus on the final stretch of development,” said Geoff Keighley. “In the case of Tomb Raider I’m especially excited because, at its heart, this is a tale about the act of reinvention, both of a studio and of a franchise.”
You can sign up for the Final Hours of Tomb Raider newsletter here. The Final Hours of Tomb Raider will be available March 2013 for iPad, PC, and for the first time, for Kindle Fire via a partnership with Amazon.com.
You won’t have to wait till March to peek under Tomb Raider’s hood, however. The Final Hours concept has been expanded for the first time to include a series of fly-on-the-wall shorts. Even better? Actor and gamer Zachary Levi of Chuck fame will host the documentaries.
The debut “Final Hours” episode is available above, showcasing the newly revealed voice of Lara Croft, Camilla Luddington. Enjoy your first look behind the scenes of Tomb Raider!
