PSA: Bethesda reports possible security breach, changed your password

    The Hacks continue, Jun 15, 2011, 2:22 PM, YourPSHome.net, 3019
Hackers may have infiltrated the Bethesda forum database Friday morning, causing Bethesda to reset all user passwords. Forum user passwords were encrypted and Bethesda has not confirmed any information was taken, but is taking this precaution regardless. If you have an account on the forums, Bethesda recommends changing your password to something more secure than the name of your first dog and favorite number (Bubbles69) on all sites you have an account with. This is Bethesda's second hacker scare since June, so if you didn't change your information then, you might want to do it this time. Fool me once, and all that.

BART anticipates more cyber attacks from 'Anonymous' hackers

Officials at the Bay Area Rapid Transit system, whose website was hit by a group of hackers known as Anonymous, say more cyber attacks are possible.BART spokesman Jim Allison said the agency anticipated further attempts to disrupt its online presence and that it had brought in experts from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for assistance. The FBI was also investigating.BART was attempting to contact more than 2,400 customers Sunday afternoon to inform them that their personal information had been obtained and published by a group of hackers. The security breach was perpetrated by the hacker-activist group Anonymous, which launched cyber attacks Sunday against BART and the Fullerton Police Department in retaliation for deadly confrontations between police and homeless men.

BART anticipates more cyber attacks from 'Anonymous' hackers: continued

The cyber attack against the Fullerton police did not appear to be successful, but officials at the San Francisco-area mass transit authority were forced to shut down MyBART.org, a marketing website designed to encourage riders to use the system for travel to leisure events. The hacker group posted the names, home addresses, email addresses and phone numbers of thousands of Bay Area residents, but a BART spokesman said the website held no sensitive financial information."We are in the process of contacting our customers to offer advice and extend regrets that this has happened," said Allison.Allison said the FBI was investigating the breach, and Department of Homeland Security experts were advising the agency during the crisis.

BART anticipates more cyber attacks from 'Anonymous' hackers: End

The group targeted BART after the fatal shooting of a homeless man last month and because the agency shut down cellphone service in its trains and stations during a demonstration last week over the incident. The threat to hack the Fullerton police website was in response to the death of Kelly Thomas during a confrontation with officers last month. The city deployed its information technology staff to secure computers and electronic communications and to monitor the systems for intrusions.

BART mobile shutdown provokes Anonymous hackers continued

The hackers posted details of over 2,000 myBART users online.
In a typically-worded statement, the hacking group said: "We are Anonymous, we are your citizens, we are the people, we do not tolerate oppression from any government agency."BART has proved multiple times that they have no problem exploiting and abusing the people."BART's main website, BART.gov, was left unaffected. However, myBART.org - which carries offers and extra services for passengers - was defaced and, as of Monday, remained offline. 'Disruptive activities'An action group has called for the disbanding of the BART police force following the July 3 shooting of a homeless man Charles Hill and also the 2009 killing of another man, Oscar Grant. Johannes Mehserle was convicted of involuntary manslaughter over the death of Oscar GrantProtesters have already been successful in rendering some stations on the network unusable by staging mass sit-ins.BART took the decision, on 11 August, to shut off mobile phone reception at some of its sites.

BART mobile shutdown provokes Anonymous hackers continued again

In a statement, the transport company said: "BART temporarily interrupted service at select BART stations as one of many tactics to ensure the safety of everyone on the platform."It said protesters had stated that they: "would use mobile devices to coordinate their disruptive activities and communicate about the location and number of BART Police". BART added: "Disturbance during commute times at busy downtown San Francisco stations could lead to platform overcrowding and unsafe conditions for BART customers, employees and demonstrators. UK troublesThe move was widely criticised as being heavy-handed, with some San Francisco residents suggesting that blocking phone use was a violation of free speech.BART's decision has parallels with recent troubles in England where days of riots were sparked when 29-year-old Mark Duggan was shot dead by police in Tottenham, north London.

BART mobile shutdown provokes Anonymous hackers again continued

Prime Minister David Cameron suggested in Parliament that access to social networks could be blocked in times of civil unrest. Please turn on JavaScript.Media requires JavaScript to play.David Cameron outlines ideas for social media measures during riotingHis comments came after it emerged some of the looting and violence was co-ordinated by people using services such as Blackberry messenger. His statement was widely condemned by rights campaigners who said that such measures could be an attack on civil liberties. On Monday, BART warned of further disruption to the service, and did not rule out that similar blocking-measures could be used.'Completely unjustified'However, reaction to Anonymous' intrusions has been less than supportive. Laura Eichman, whose phone number was published along with the stolen personal data, said: "I think what they [the hackers] did was illegal and wrong.

"I work in IT myself, and I think that this was not ethical hacking. I think this was completely unjustified."Anonymous has argued that anger should be directed at BART's "unsecure" data protection methods, rather than the group.

Sony Hires Former DHS Official as New Chief Security Officer

    The Hacks continue, Jun 15, 2011, 2:22 PM, YourPSHome.net, 3019
Sony is looking to a former employee of the Department of Homeland Security to help its security efforts in the wake of the PlayStation Network breach earlier this year. Shortly after going public with news that hackers had successfully attacked the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services, compromising tens of millions of users' personal data in the process, Sony pledged to create a new position of Chief Information Security Officer. The purpose was "to add a new position of expertise in and accountability for customer data protection and supplement existing information security personnel." This came in addition to the implementation of a variety of new security measures like additional firewalls, improved encryption, and better detection of network intrusions.
