A lot of Home developers are starting to branch out into the non-Home game market. Our friends at Juggernaut Games are starting a new project as well. If it is anything like the magic they have brought to PlayStation Home, it should be a winner! So I asked Juggernaut's CCO, George Cochrane, to tell us a bit about this project and maybe get some hints on some new goodies they are brewing for Home. YPSH : First, I'd like to thank you George and everyone at Juggernaut Games for supporting YourPSHome since you started. JG : Thanks to you Karen, and to everyone at YPSH for your hard work over these past five years. Home wouldn't have been the same without you! YPSH : Thanks George! So lets talk about your new game project! What's its name and give us an overview. JG : Our new project is StarCrawlers, a first person old-school dungeon crawling RPG with a sci-fi theme that we are developing for PC, Mac and Linux! YPSH : How did this idea come about? JG : We're big RPG fans here, so StarCrawlers is somewhat of a dream project for us – its got a bit of a nostalgic feel that reminds you of the games you played while growing up, yet with updated graphics and techniques that bring something new to the table. YPSH : How long in development? JG : We've been working on Starcrawlers for about 5 months now, and we're excited to see it progressing rapidly! YPSH : Do you have an estimated target date yet for release? JG : Its pretty early on, but right now we're targeting a release at the end of this year. YPSH : So Star Crawlers is an RPG with dungeons and events are randomized? JG : Yes- every dungeon you visit is procedurally generated and filled with random enemies, loot, events and more! YPSH : I like that idea. A fresh game each time. JG : Exactly – you'll never see the same dungeon twice. That keeps StarCrawlers new and interesting and gives you a reason to keep playing – you never know what kinds of characters and events you'll come across on your next Crawl! YPSH : Can I customize my character? JG : Yes – you'll be able to customize your Crawler crew with the characters classes you like best (up to 4 characters on your crew at any one time) and then each character will have multiple skill trees and abilities that you can mod out and combine in any way you'd like! There are tons of character customization options and its really fun to try out all the different character builds! YPSH : What are the goals in Star Crawlers? JG : You captain a crew that lives in the outer reaches of space – its a pretty rough place, so your first and foremost goal is survival! To do that you'll need plenty of credits and some good gear – which you'll earn by running missions on abandoned ships, raiding corporate facilities, and completing objectives and quests for people you meet along the way. YPSH : Will it be a free game with paid add-ons or just an outright purchase? JG : Right now, we are planning to do it as an outright purchase. YPSH : I understand anyone can help get Star Crawlers financed? JG : Yes! We're planning to finance the game through crowdfunding, so look for us on Kickstarter next month! We've got all sorts of reward tiers for backers – you can get StarCrawlers t-shirts, send us your picture and become an NPC in the game, and even design a quest! (Editors Note : From Wikipedia : “Kickstarter is the world's largest crowdfunding platform. The company’s stated mission is to help bring creative projects to life. Since its launch, more than 5 million people have funded more than 50,000 creative projects, such as films, music, stage shows, comics, journalism, video games, and food-related projects. People who back Kickstarter projects are offered tangible rewards and special experiences in exchange for their pledges.”) YPSH : What platforms will it be on at launch? JG : We're starting with PC, Mac & Linux. YPSH : Do you plan on adding others? JG : We'd love to release StarCrawlers for iOs & Android, and we'll definitely consider other platforms as well after the initial release. YPSH : It sounds like Star Crawlers still has a way to go before it gets to final release. Let me pick your brain a bit on other projects. Any other non-Home related projects in the works? JG : Not right now - between StarCrawlers and Home, we're staying pretty busy! We do have lots of ideas percolating, so once StarCrawlers is done, we have lots of options for what to work on next! YPSH : Let's talk Home for a moment. We are all disappointed that Home hasn't made it to the PS4. Sony has been ultra-silent on Home's future. We all are left to assume that Home will continue to exist for a couple of years on the PS3. Does Juggernaut intend to keep on supporting Home? JG : Absolutely, we will continue to support our existing products and spaces and will also continue to create new experiences for the Home community! We're hoping to see Home stick around for quite a while. YPSH : Dare I ask, any tidbits you can tell us about what you have in mind for Home in the future? JG : We've got some StarCrawlers themed rewards launching this week in Serenity Plaza, and you might notice a few new characters wandering around there as well! YPSH : I see a fantastic Star Crawlers personal space in Home's future! JG : A StarCrawlers themed personal space is something we would love to do! YPSH : Once again George, thanks for your time and support. We wish Juggernaut all the best with its future! JG : Thanks very much Karen! It was a pleasure to talk to you (as always). We here at Juggernaut have our fingers crossed that YPSH will be around for another 5 years!
Nice interview, I've been following the progress on this game and it looks like something I'll definitely give a try. Nice to see we'll get some nice Home rewards related to the game too
The game so far looks really interesting I'd probably give it a look in the future and I'm loving the home content.
looks like fun and would be interesting if they do bring this to the Playstation Platforms in the future
I like RPG's, but some FPS's make me want to "yack". I would like to try an open or closed BETA when it is available to the public.
To get shirts, explore serenity plaza and find hidden 2-d robots. for sword, do the same for Halloween serenity plaza
just need to find Plop 3x to get the shirt(s) and Crabby 3x to get the sword(s) [see above interview for images of crabby and Plop]
I was running into the same problem and only got the sword. So I asked Juggernaut & I learned there were 2 different kinds of robots to find just like it says above. I had only been finding the bigger one, Crabby, which I found 3 in a row really fast. I think I found the smaller one, Plop, once or twice, but I guess not 3 times yet. I was also just told to try the planters by the Bramblenook windmill or down by the water to find Plop.
try both the Halloween space and the regular space. took me some time in the Halloween space to find the 3 small robots.
I'm not sure if there is a separate thread for this or not, but I do see the website banner here with a link to Juggernaut's KickStarter page for StarCrawlers (StarCrawlers by Juggernaut Games — Kickstarter). I've been following the progress of the game for a while now and happy to say I backed the project on KickStarter a couple weeks ago. I saw that Carla had tweeted a reminder about it early Saturday morning and found out she had pledged the same level that I did, "Get in the Game" ($150). At this pledge level, the developers will create a NPC (non-playable character) for the game based on you and your likeness (or someone of your choosing), so you you can be digitally immortalized in the game which is pretty awesome! Really I just want the game to be funded, which I think is safe to say will happen as they have currently $57,300 out of their goal of $65,000. That's 88% of their goal and they still have 17 days to gol! I remember when they had raised over 50% of their goal in just a little over a week too! With one of the most recent project updates, Juggernaut is talking about stretch goals with new portrait variations and character classes. Also, Juggernaut has added "Get In The Game 2" ($175) and "Choose Your Adventure 2" ($275) pledge levels because the previous ones had been closed. They just require $25 more than before. So there is still a chance for you to be digitally immortalized in the game and help it's development at the same time! Anyways, I hope more of you are supporting this and other projects on KickStarter, but especially this one because it's by developers who have created great content for PS Home
