The law which sought to ban the sale or rental of violent videogames to minors in the state of California has been deemed unconstitutional; The Supreme Court made the call with a 7-2 vote earlier today, saying in clear terms that ?video games qualify for First Amendment protection.??Like the protected books, plays, and movies that preceded them, video games communicate ideas-and even social messages-through many familiar literary devices (such as characters, dialogue, plot, and music) and through features distinctive to the medium (such as the player?s interaction with the virtual world),? stated the Court (full *.pdf here).?That suffices to confer First Amendment protection. Under our Constitution, ?esthetic and moral judgments about art and literature . . . are for the individual to make, not for the Government to decree, even with the mandate or approval of a majority. http://www.thatvideogameblog.com/2011/06/27/scotus-california-violent-games-law-unconstitutional/
The Daily Show Treatment Given to This Week's Supreme Court Decision Jon Stewart talks about the Supreme Court's decision to strike down California's violent videogame bill. As it's a political matter, this week's decision by the Supreme Court to strike down a bill that would ban the sale of violent videogames to minors is right up the alley of The Daily Show. It's a few days late in getting around to the matter, but the show spent a few minutes last night covering the decision and showing some particularly gruesome clips from Mortal Kombat. Jon Stewart himself admits, "Personally, I don't know if videogame violence affects children." He highlights how arbitrary it is that violent content can't be regulated while sexual content can be. It does seem to be a strange distinction and it's unclear exactly what side of the argument he comes down on personally. http://www.1up.com/news/daily-show-treatment-supreme-court-decision
First let me say Queen's Blade was awesome but the ending pissed me off. Now back to the topic. HELL YEAH TAKE THAT GOVERNATOR!!!! Anyone who thinks they can control the flow of ideas needs to soot them self.Games are no difrent. Let the parents take responsibility and control what games there kids get. I know I am going to let me kids play violent games just on principle. I used to watch Freddie Kruger and Friday the 13th as a kid! That make me a bad parent? Well I guess my dad was horrible then. LOL!
hummm.....Arnold Schwartznegger is no longer the governor. It's Gov. Jerry Brown now. btw, I'm actually infavor of that law. If the kids want the game, they have to get their parents to buy it.That puts the control and responsibility in the parent's hands. Bad ruling by the SCOTUS.
I've watched Freddie Kruger and Friday the 13th as a kid too & my parents explain to me that Freddie & Jason are movies & the difference between reality & fantasy. Times are different now Parents would rather blame video games for their kids violent behavior instead taking responsibility for getting them the violent games in the first place.
I kinda think it's not only the kids fault, but the parents. I'd love to llet my kid play a violent game but if I know my kid can't handle that in the right way then they will just have to play clean games.
Exactly! If I notice my kids are acting a fool im going to take away those games. Honestly I grew up in a rough city. Watching THAT was more traumatic then any video game. Life is more changing then any video game. I mean what are we supposed to do? Take away every single bad thing in our kids life? That is impossible. All we can do is control WHAT WE CAN as a parent. If I grew up having all those "bad things" taken away from me as a kid I would probably be a shell of a man now. Plus think of one last fact. If you never experience any bad as a child how can you truly reconize it?
That's why parents are there to help you process that bad experience when your a kid. You don't throw it in front of kids & hope for the best then when it goes wrong you blame the object, No you teach them right from wrong so they understand & when they reach a certain age then allow them to experience those things but carefully monitored by a parent.
