Hey YPSH! Thanks for taking the time to post news about The Four Kings: Casino & Slots! I just took this picture today of a brand new slot machine that we will be brining to the casino floor. If you want to play and chat with us the best time to catch us on is from 9am-5pm ET on a weekday, and as usual the peak user times are at night during the weekdays, and at any time during the weekend. Right now the game is $10 USD on Steam to play and you have unlimited chips during the early access phase of The Four Kings. You also get a lot of other bonuses for joining us in Early Access. When the game comes out of our beta test it will be Free To Play, and we will be offering the same chip packages we did in PlayStation Home. The game is playable on Windows and Mac. Hope to see you there! DL_Adam
@DL_Adam Whats the status of the PS4 version Adam, or is that the stage after the Steam version is all made?
Since you've played The Four Kings on your Mac, you can see that there are still some things missing, especially from the menu. We're furiously working on the last few features before we do a port over to PS4. Luckily we are using the Unity Engine to develop our game, so moving the project over to run the PS4 will be no problem. Actually, we have already tested to make sure that it does run on a PS4, and it does quite well, but we haven't got much further than that at the moment. We'll need to do a lot of testing, some slight modifications, and then go through Sony's approval process. So to answer your question, we haven't officially started development on the PS4 Version, but at the same time what you see on Steam is the PS4 version (if that makes sense.) We have the development kits ready to go we are just waiting to finalize all of the base features.
Right now we are obviously focused on delivering a solid social multiplayer casino experience. We definitely have the ability to expand beyond the casino, so yes it is possible, and I would personally like to see other themed spaces much like Home. However, our next step outside of the casino area is to offer personal spaces. Behind the scenes we have been making a standard hotel room but we have plans and concepts for some more fun and exotic themed personal spaces.
While I was on my Mac, and did download the beta test from Stream, it was very laggy and the wardrobe didn't really load up as well. I noticed the same sounds were used from the Casino Concourse from PS Home, which is a good thing, plus their daily freebie chip wheel is also there. Despite all the lagging problems on my Mac, it would be interesting to see this on PS4.
Thanks for the support! I just want to let you know that the Mac version of The Four Kings hasn't been optimized yet, but we are hard at working getting everything done as quick as possible. Keep an eye on our patch notes that we release with every update to see what we've done to the game. PC is currently our top priority with a close second is Mac since they are very related. As soon as a couple of our programmers come back from their holidays we'll be starting optimizing The Four Kings for PS4. We are posting updates everyday on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+!
Oh, and the sounds are currently being worked on and getting a much needed overhaul. All of our machine games have new sounds, and we are working on the table game sounds.
Adam, I have a general question for you. Home suffered from a LOT of lag. For whatever reasons. Is there anything DL can do to make the Four Kings experience better and avoid that problem? Also, another nagging Home problem was your inventory. We were encouraged to buy things, but when we did we got punnished with a VERY sluggish inventory system. Example: Last night I was looking for an LMO. It took me an HOUR to get it out of storage and running. And I have a reasonably fast connection (fiber). Anything DL can do to address that issue?
Lag and loading are always going to be an issue with online games. If we are talking about lag in the respect of internet connection and interacting with other players that is going to be all dependent on a player's personal internet connection speed. If we detect that a player is not meeting the minimum required internet speed we have no choice but to force a disconnect due to network instability. So this issue would be less about "lag" and more about loading assets. Firstly, I'd like to just mention that right now we are just working on getting everything functional. We certainly need to do need to do an optimization pass on our inventory and our store, and how we handle loading all of the items for each category. Right now we are having to load everything in when bring up a store. It's not efficient by any means but it gets the job done for now. It's definitely something we have control over, and it will be something that will be sped up. Loading assets is always going to be something we are going to have to juggle around because assets take up RAM in your computer. If we load every single piece of art into the game when you first start it up there would be virtually no loading time but you would need like 8GB of RAM to play the game. To keep RAM usage down we load art assets into RAM when we need them, and then we unload them when they can no longer be seen. We are trying to keep the RAM usage down so that people who have an average computer can still play our game. PS. There are no LMO's in the game just yet.
Yes, that's because Home was built upon very old architecture. We will do our best to provide the best social gaming experience.
@DL_Adam This is something I'm wondering about, but if i was to say get the All-in Pass DLC on steam, would the stuff and come to think of it could everything be transferred to the PS4 version when it comes out, eg any rewards and paid content?
Right now at this point we do not have plans to have any cross platform compatibility. One of the main reasons is because Steam and PS4 have two separate stores, and these guys get a percentage from everything purchased within their platforms. Here is one of the issues we are trying to avoid: Say you only purchase items or chips on PS4 with real money. Now you want to use all of those items on Steam. Steam is going to say to us, "Hey, um, excuse me. Why is Sony profiting from this game and we are not?" I know it's the same game, but the products are hosted in two different stores
