Hmm, some good suggestions there, very good. For me though, I have to put in a word for Celtic Frost. They virtually founded the genre of Black Metal and remain its biggest influence, despite that being only one aspect of their work! Often labelled Avant Garde Metal, the huge variety to their work is off-putting to some and includes such styles as pop, pure orchestral, operatic, entriely samples and drum machine or even one track that is entirely made up of people making spooky noises while somebody tunelessly hits a glockenspiel. Their best known and most popular tracks are undoubtedly their Black Metal pieces though, and this often underpins other work, even where fusion and experimentation creep in. For me, however, their few Gothic Rock numbers are where they excell. Though strange and unnerving at first, gothic numbers like Obscured and Drown in Ashes from the awe-inspiring Monotheist album, their final album as it turned out, are true classics. It's right up there with their seminal album Into the Pandemonium, which had its own share of classics such as I Won't Dance and the suprisingly catchy, light hearted pop track Mexican Radio. Though disbanded now, the lead singer has gone on to form Triptykon to continue his work. So far, Triptykon have yet to capture the true brilliance of Celtic Frost though as they seem more tightly focussed on the Black Metal genre and though their songs are excellent, I miss the unpredictable variety we had with Frost. Celtic Frost Triptykon If you've not heard of them, but you like gothic/black metal style music then take time to listen to the originators. Just be sure to listen to plenty of tracks, due to the variety of styles used.
