Resident Evil 6 Includes Three Playable Stories, Each With Co-op Play; Now Releasing

    Resident Evil 6 Announced, Kimilicious, Apr 12, 2012, 6:45 AM, YourPSHome.net, jpg, resident_evil_6_story.jpg

Resident Evil 6 will give players control of veteran zombie slayers Leon S. Kennedy and Chris Redfield, each with their own stories and co-op partners, in distinct, interwoven story threads. They'll also take control of a third, playing as the mysterious mercenary, Jake Muller, son of evil Resident Evil staple Albert Wesker.

Kennedy, Redfield and Muller will each have their own sidekick, Capcom revealed at its Captivate event last week, allowing for solo and co-op play throughout, both offline and online.

According to Capcom, Leon S. Kennedy is paired with US government agent Helena Harper, Chris Redfield teams up with fellow BSAA member Piers Nivans and Jake Muller is joined by Sherry Birkin, daughter of former key Umbrella scientists, William and Annette. They'll travel from North America, the war-torn Eastern European state of Edonia and the Chinese city of Lanshiang battling a new threat.

The six protagonists of Resident Evil 6 will confront the all-new C-virus, which spawns zombies, the previously revealed J'avo monsters, and the all-new Chrysalide, which metamorphose into a new threat.

In exciting date-related news, Resident Evil 6 will come to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on October 2 — that's more than a month earlier than the previously announced release date of November 20 — with a PC version due later.

Notes From The Resident Evil 6 Captivate 2012 Presentation

    Resident Evil 6 Announced, Kimilicious, Apr 13, 2012, 2:03 AM, YourPSHome.net, jpg, RE6_Captivate_0013-640x360.jpg

By all indications, Capcom got the memo — Resident Evil 5 just wasn't that scary. But at the company's yearly Captivate event in Rome last week, series producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi uttered something that truly sent shivers down the spines of every hardened Biohazard fan in attendance: "it's not just about survival horror any more."

Shock and awe! Heresy of the highest order! But not long after sensing the mounting unrest swelling in the audience, the four-time veteran to the famously horrific survival series was quick to temper his claim with a reassuring reprieve — "it's more than that. We want to deliver a big package here."

That big package is Resident Evil 6: a tremendously ambitious project with an equally prodigious development team to match. With more than 600 people involved with the game worldwide, Resident Evil 6 not only marks one of Capcom's biggest productions to date, but also provides a clear testament to the series' dominant position amid the company's totem pole of iconic intellectual properties. With the sole exception of 2008, there has been at least one Resident Evil game every year since the series' genesis in 1996. In just the past year alone, there have been three Resident Evil releases across numerous platforms.

Just going by the numbers, it's clear that Capcom's put a lot of time and corporate dollars into their new company darling (sorry, Mega Man). But more than simply churning out the franchise's next blockbuster hit, Capcom seems determined to accomplish a nearly impossible goal: pleasing everyone. And that includes the folks whose first and favorite Resident Evil games predate Leon's action-packed excursion into dour Spanish villages.

    Resident Evil 6 Announced, Kimilicious, Apr 13, 2012, 2:03 AM, YourPSHome.net, jpg, RE6_Captivate_0010-640x360.jpg

Kobayashi notes: "what we're trying to do is put back all the thrills, chills, and spills that you would expect from the Resident Evil franchise, but we're taking everything to the next level. Everything that you love about past Resident Evil games, we're maxing that out and putting it into this game to create something huge and nothing you've ever experienced before."

Resident Evil 6 is what Kobayashi and crew deem the next vanguard in "horror entertainment," a histrionic term for what the team believes will not only rectify but improve upon all the things the series has done up to this point, action and all. Yes, zombies are back. The real ones. Moving and shooting is finally in there, too. But beyond the surface level bullet points of mechanical and design improvements lies a greater statement to what the latest game in the series is brashly trying to accomplish—absolutely everything.

    Multiple characters, multiple playstyles

Remember the "A" and "B" character scenarios from games like Resident Evil 2? That's back. But more than just presenting different perspectives that ultimately intertwine into a single storyline, Resident Evil 6 is using its three separate mini-campaigns as the game's primary means of fracturing series' mercurial identity into three distinct playstyles.

    Resident Evil 6 Announced, Kimilicious, Apr 13, 2012, 2:03 AM, YourPSHome.net, jpg, RE6_Captivate_0011-640x360.jpg

Leon Kennedy's tale begins in the sleepy fictional American town of Tall Oaks, which has recently come under attack by bioterrorists after a visit by the president of the United States. Framed for murdering the zombified chief executive, Leon embarks upon a cold trail for the truth with white house agent Helena Harper in a campaign that most closely resembles the classic creepy corridors and suspenseful high tension gameplay of classic Resident Evil fame.

Meanwhile, megabuff monster puncher Chris Redfield can be found on the streets of China investigating a bioterrorist attack in a scenario similar to the action packed trimmings of Resident Evil 5. Apparently leading up to this, there will be another chapter set six months in the past that will "impact his life in the way he makes decisions and thinks about fighting bioterrorism," says game director Eiichiro Sasaki. "What you're going to be seeing in this game is a Chris you aren't familiar with." All clues point to something involving his new buddy coming along for the ride, Piers Nivans, a talented BSAA sniper.

Then there's Jake Muller, who was indeed confirmed by Sasaki to be Albert Wesker's biological son. (Apparently, the atmosphere wasn't the only thing his old man saturated.) Working as a mercenary in a war torn eastern European countr, Jake runs into a familiar face—who Sasaki also confirmed to be Sherry Birkin—begging him to come with her, claiming that his special blood could save the world. Out of all of the campaigns described thus far, the particularities of Jake's chapter were definitely the most cryptic; something circling around the idea of escaping the country, and being relentlessly chased by pursuers.

    Resident Evil 6 Announced, Kimilicious, Apr 13, 2012, 2:03 AM, YourPSHome.net, jpg, RE6_Captivate_0017-640x360.jpg

Also, Sasaki seems to have a huge crush on Sherry Birkin. ("Whoo! *sounding flustered* I like Sherry Birkin.")

Though each character will begin their journeys on separate ends of the earth, their travels will all ultimately intersect in the fictional Chinese city of Lanshiang. What will ultimately come to a head there is anyone's guess.

    Monster Mash

It's true, the Romero zombies are back—but plain ol' shamblers just won't do for 2012. Apart from being able to move swiftly and hurdle over obstacles, some outliers of this fearsome new breed of undead may even be armed with the weapons and implements they were holding onto while still alive fending off other zombies; an interesting gameplay wrinkle that culminates in allowing you to pull off contextual melee kills with whatever object you're able to wrest from their cold dead hands.

But fans of las plagas, the majini, and every other permutation of the fast moving, insect addled humanoid need not fret, the new J'avo enemy seems apt to take their place as the next big bug to squash. It isn't just their ability to use any weapon type that's cause for concern; when parts of their bodies are shot off, their quick regenerative system allows them to regrow them into grotesque new mutated forms. With all manner of body parts prone to a secondary mutation, it's an enemy that Kobayashi believes will be an entirely different experience each time you fight them, depending on how you attack them.

    Resident Evil 6 Announced, Kimilicious, Apr 13, 2012, 2:03 AM, YourPSHome.net, jpg, RE6_Captivate_0021-640x360.jpg

The most mysterious new creepy crawly is one they've appropriately saved for last. As it turns out, the newly concocted C-Virus carries the unique property of turning the humans it's infected into cocoon shaped husks called chrysalids. Whatever pops out is a total mystery, one that "isn't totally human," and one they've neglected to show during the presentation. Now there's suspense, for you.

Reinventing the third-person shooter, once more

Sasaki believes that the idea of horror goes beyond spooky monster closets and the game's mere phrasing of events; somewhere amid the streams of language and concepts, his own personal definition of fright becomes more closely married to the feeling of tension and immediacy, both on the inside as well as on the fingertips. A "new style of horror," as the team mystifyingly calls it, and one that's irrevocably tied to perfecting the series' signature control scheme.

Here, it's clear that the action-oriented cues set in motion by Resident Evil 4 have no signs of slowing down. Quite the contrary; in fact, it's rapidly evolving into something even more obtusely action packed than ever before. "While we're returning to the roots of horror in Resident Evil, we're not returning to the roots of the [tank based] control scheme. This time you will be able to move and shoot, among other shooting actions like jumping on your back and rolling around."

    Resident Evil 6 Announced, Kimilicious, Apr 13, 2012, 2:03 AM, YourPSHome.net, jpg, RE6_Captivate_0001-640x360.jpg

The challenge, Sasaki describes, is coming up with a "stress free control scheme" that achieves a balance between smoothness of motion while maintaining that crucial element of horror. One such example Sasaki brings up involves the new back dive mechanic. "If you're on your back, you might think you'd have an easier time picking enemies off, but we made it so some enemies will jump on top of you or lunge at your throat, and you have to get your gun out in time to shoot them off you."

Other new innovations, such as leaning left and right during an upright gun stance or crawling on your back during the backwards prone position, tease at some other potential applications down the road, invariably pointing towards a control scheme that's set to empower the player in more ways than ever before. Can a game that allows you to do this much still be scary? The Silent Hill series' recent downslide into a more combat oriented pace proved to be one of the major factors of its undoing. Resident Evil, it seems, is trying to replace that horrific feeling of helplessness (read: feeble tank controls) with the fight or flight thrill of the moment. Pulse pounding action, in the development team's eyes, comes in more flavors than one.

    So is it scary?

In a manner of speaking, sure. If your scientific measure of scaritude entails moody, moonlit scenery, chilling bouts of silence, and eerie, pervasive imagery punctuated by the occasional jumpy moment, then the game certainly had all of that in spades.

The onstage gameplay demo for Captivate 2012 takes place shortly after Leon ices the president in the debut trailer. After taking a moment to collect their wits, Leon and Helena plot an escape from their current location—an old, countryside university. Cue the flashing light bulb above your head. The parallels to the first game's mansion are certainly there; the creepy banquet halls, antique baroque furniture, and shadowy, light-deprived corridors evoked a classic sense of minimalist Resident Evil with measured pacing through and through. In fact, it wasn't until the harrowing final moments of escaping through the zombie infested parking lot that Leon and Helena were finally given the opportunity to unleash their payload upon the shambling masses.

    Resident Evil 6 Announced, Kimilicious, Apr 13, 2012, 2:03 AM, YourPSHome.net, jpg, RE6_Captivate_0003-640x360.jpg

For nearly the entire duration of the presentation, the game seemed quite pleased with simply stringing players along on a tense and nearly action-less subplot involving Leon and Helena coming upon a sick university staff member searching for his daughter. There's obviously a red flag here, and the game knows you know it. During the long stretches of roaming through the university's musky halls, the guy frequently slips in and out of view, often obscured by the shadows but always within earshot because of that telltale cough. In one particularly nasty hacking spell, he even became unresponsive for just a slight moment…but apparently the worst had come to pass. For now.

After a labored search, the collective ears of the search party perk up to a nearby noise which turns out to be the daughter (who pops out with the shrill shriek of a classic horror music cue, no less). She's just as ill, if not in slightly worse condition, as dear old dad, but the three still manage to make haste towards the nearest emergency elevator. There's coughing, more coughing, and eventually a peaceful slip into silence. The father then blubbers, but even that eventually fades into the darkness too.

It's quiet, but not for long. A mushy and muffled yet all too familiar sound fills the narrow space of that elevator, and before long, Leon is forced to draw a bead on daughter eating father.

    The future of fear

What's left are a few straggling bits of information; co-op is back, with proper drop-in drop-out support (no need for backtracking to checkpoints this time). Mercenary mode will be unlocked from the beginning, though Kobayashi urges players to play through the trio of protags first for the complete experience.

Oh, and apparently the game is also coming a full month earlier than expected.

Thanks to the immense response from the debut trailer earlier this year, Kobayashi was able to negotiate with the rest of the dev team to deliver Resident Evil 6 on a slightly accelerated timeline—a slightly worrisome move for a game attempting to do this much. But for all it aspires to accomplish, having one less month of development may very well be the least of its concerns. Still, it's hard not to be impressed by the current results.

Resident Evil 6 will be out on October 2nd, 2012 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. For more information, you can check out our interview with Kobayashi and Sasaki embedded for your convenience here, as well as in future Side Mission posts down the road.

Resident Evil 6 Pre-order Mercenaries Maps Detailed

    Resident Evil 6 Announced, Kimilicious, Apr 13, 2012, 4:22 AM, YourPSHome.net, jpg, resident-evil-6.jpg

Capcom promised more details soon on the retailer-specific bonus maps that players will receive for pre-ordering Resident Evil 6, and now those details are here. A new post on the Capcom-Unity site confirms that the three maps, available with GameStop, Best Buy, and Amazon pre-orders, are part of the returning Mercenaries mode.

Unlike the story-driven campaign portion of the game, Mercenaries mode -- first introduced in RE3 -- is a points-based challenge in which players fight against the clock as they take out as many enemies as possible. That basic idea is supplemented with trappings like combo chains and time bonuses to keep players coming back for more.

    Resident Evil 6 Announced, Kimilicious, Apr 13, 2012, 4:22 AM, YourPSHome.net, jpg, resident-evil-6-pre-order-mercenaries-maps-detailed.jpg

GameStop pre-orders of Resident Evil 6 will come with a map called The Catacombs. It's a dark underground location filled with both zombies and booby traps. You can see one of them right there in the pic, a spiked floor trap. It should be fun to impale zombies on that thing.

    Resident Evil 6 Announced, Kimilicious, Apr 13, 2012, 4:22 AM, YourPSHome.net, jpg, resident-evil-6-pre-order-mercenaries-maps-detailed.jpg

Amazon pre-orders come with the High Seas Fortress map. This one is much more of an outdoor location, with the endless parade of zombies spawning on the deck of a massive aircraft carrier. The action also extends inside the ship, covering both the wide-open hangar areas and the military ship's tight corridors.

    Resident Evil 6 Announced, Kimilicious, Apr 13, 2012, 4:22 AM, YourPSHome.net, jpg, resident-evil-6-pre-order-mercenaries-maps-detailed.jpg

Finally, Best Buy pre-orders come with the Rail Yard map. It's a "multi-level stage" with fighting areas set everywhere from inside parked trains to the roof of the facility. The Capcom post notes that the October 2, 2012 release date applies to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of RE6. A PC version will be coming as well, but there's no date set yet and it's not clear if or how these pre-order bonuses will apply to that version.

The Secrets of Resident Evil 6

SPOILER WARNING: While this article contains no major spoilers, keep in mind that it does include some details that you may not want to know if you're trying to go into Resident Evil 6 knowing nothing about the story. You've been warned!

    Resident Evil 6 Announced, Kimilicious, Apr 20, 2012, 4:23 AM, YourPSHome.net, jpg, resident-evil-6-20120418020726349.jpg

We revealed back in January that Ada Wong would appear in RE6. Capcom still hasn't officially confirmed Ada's presence in the game (even when we asked), but this trailer gives us a more extensive look at her. While we don't know Ada's exact role quite yet, it's safe to say that she remains a spy and double agent as in previous Resident Evil games. With Sherry Birkin making a return (which we also confirmed back in January), it makes sense that Ada is involved. Both characters were prominently featured in the events of Resident Evil 2, and Capcom has stated that the past of the franchise will play a role in its future.

In the trailer, Ada seems to have some kind of influence over enemies. At one point she's surrounded by J'avo (image #01, above) and appears to be in charge of the large monster that's attacking Jake (#02). Can she somehow control enemies? Are Chris and Leon fighting over her at the end of the trailer?

    Resident Evil 6 Announced, Kimilicious, Apr 20, 2012, 4:23 AM, YourPSHome.net, jpg, resident-evil-6-20120418020725246.jpg

The chrysalid seen here seems to house some kind of major new enemy, and our sources tell us it's one of the key plot points of RE6. While we don't know what comes out quite yet, the open chrysalid does appear to contain a human, or at least something human-esque. Is it a new character? A new type of enemy? Or is it just the giant creature from the game's first trailer? We do know there are multiple chrysalids. Precisely what causes this mutation, and whether it needs a host, remains to be seen.

One key detail regarding the chrysalid(s) - it appears Ada Wong understands how they work. When confronting Chris Redfield's BSAA squad, Wong detonates some sort of 'needle bomb' that infects Redfield's crew, turning them immediately into terrifying creatures. This process seems to be a very quick mutation, meaning the slower gestation that the trailer suggests might simply be the result of editing. We've previously speculated this event is what causes Redfield to act differently, further lending support to the notion that Leon and Chris clash over Ada's fate.

    Resident Evil 6 Announced, Kimilicious, Apr 20, 2012, 4:23 AM, YourPSHome.net, jpg, resident-evil-6-20120418020724123.jpg

The scary beast (#05) is the carrier of the C-Virus. While full details on the virus haven't been revealed, it's distinctly different than the T and G-Viruses of previous Resident Evil fame. As seen in the trailer, the "carrier" is able to secrete a gas that converts people into zombies.

C-Virus zombies (#06) are more mobile and agile than Resident Evil zombies we've seen in the past. RE6's zombies will sprint toward you, leap and can even carry weapons if they were holding them when they were converted. The C-Virus may have more specific applications than turning people into zombies, though its further uses are currently unknown.

    Resident Evil 6 Announced, Kimilicious, Apr 20, 2012, 4:23 AM, YourPSHome.net, jpg, resident-evil-6-20120418020724701.jpg

The shadowy figure seen here is one of the trailer's biggest mysteries. It's too difficult to see this character to draw any concrete conclusions, but he seems too important to ignore entirely. Resident Evil 6's latest trailer is deliberately misleading at points, so this character may not be what he seems. Is it a disoriented BSAA soldier? Is it simply Chris after he hits his head in the trailer? Is it some kind of tyrant or zombie? The answers remain to be seen.

    Resident Evil 6 Announced, Kimilicious, Apr 20, 2012, 4:23 AM, YourPSHome.net, jpg, resident-evil-6-20120418020725783.jpg

Despite theories to the contrary, the man above (image #09) is not Alex Wesker. Our sources have confirmed that this character has never appeared in a previous Resident Evil game, but that he's a major player in RE6 (perhaps even as important as Ada Wong).

According to our sources, this character is Derek Simmons, a National Security Advisor pursuing multiple agents. Throughout RE6, he'll interact with all of the major players, including recruiting Sherry Birkin and tracking Leon Kennedy. Simmons has his hands in everything that's happening in Resident Evil 6 and surely holds many secrets of his own.

Resident Evil Creator Shinji Mikami Returns To Survival Horror

    Resident Evil 6 Announced, Kimilicious, Apr 26, 2012, 3:34 PM, YourPSHome.net, jpg, zwei_concept.jpg

Shinji Mikami, the man behind video games like Resident Evil, God Hand and Vanquish, is returning to the survival horror genre. Mikami's studio Tango Gameworks is currently hard at work on a project codenamed Zwei, which is described as "the realization of pure survival horror."

"The above image is a collage of different environments we put together for this announcement and is intended to give a feel for the tone and the direction the production is taking," reads an announcement on the official

Tango Gameworks web site. "However, neither the code name nor the image is intended to tell you exactly what is in the game."

Mikami says Zwei will be an experience which "that pushes the limits of fear and exhilaration."
According to details from the newest issue of Famitsu magazine, Zwei is expected to come to "HD consoles," although development is quite early, according to Andriasang's translation. Mikami says he's being very hands-on with the new project.

Tango Gameworks was acquired by Zenimax Media, the parent company of Bethesda Softworks, in October 2010.

E3 2012: Resident Evil 6 To Feature Four Player Online Co-Op via "Crossover" Points

    Resident Evil 6 Announced, Kimilicious, Jun 7, 2012, 2:35 AM, YourPSHome.net, jpg, Resident-Evil-6-Montage.jpg
We've known for some time that Resident Evil 6 will feature storylines that cross over, but that Crossover theme will also apply to RE6's gameplay.

At different points in Resident Evil 6's trio of branching narratives, opportunities will pop up for two separate co-op teams across the world to band together in four-player cooperative play.

The way it'll work out, as we learned today at E3:

During the chapters in whichthese happen, a prompt will pop up saying that a Crossover point is be available and asks if you'd like to Crossover with anyone. If you say yes, you'll be randomly matched with someone who's doing the opposite side of the same mission… so say you're in China (in the game) playing a Leon mission, you could be matched with someone who's in also China playing a Jake mission.

You could opt to skip the Crossover, of course, and be on your way.

There's no particular bonus, so to speak, for completing the Crossovers, aside from the fun that comes with taking on a particularly difficult bad guy.

Many of the social aspects of the feature are still being hammered out says Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, a Producer at Capcom, but the gist of it is that optional four-player boss battles will be available for players in Resident Evil 6.

Another relevant bit from the "Crossover" demo shown to media members today: Each of the game's three main storylines will contain roughly, "70-80% of the volume of the entirety of Resident Evil 5", as per Mr. Hirabayashi.

Ok I just saw this and I don't know if it's been discussed. I wonder if this is worthwhile.

If you're willing to spend an extra $30 when you buy Capcom's upcoming Resident Evil 6, you could also score digital copies of a handful of past classics from the series.

Today, on its blog Capcom-Unity, the company confirmed rumors that there would be special Resident Evil 6 Anthology editions in the U.S.

Resident Evil 6 Anthology will retail for $89.99 and will release on October 2 alongside the standard edition of the game. Interestingly, the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game contain different lineups -- with PS3 owners getting six games to the 360's four (though 360 owners will get Resident Evil Degeneration, a CG animated film as well). Still, if you have both systems, PlayStation 3 would be a much better value for the money.

Here are the games included for both systems.

    RESIDENT EVIL 6 ANTHOLOGY (PS3)
    Resident Evil 6
    Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition
    Resident Evil 4 HD
    Resident Evil 3: Nemesis
    Resident Evil 2
    Resident Evil: Director's Cut

    RESIDENT EVIL 6 ARCHIVES (360)
    Resident Evil 6
    Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition
    Resident Evil 4 HD
Resident Evil Code: Veronica X HD
    Resident Evil Degeneration (DVD film)
