ps3mediaserver - Java Upnp Media Server, dedicated to PS3 - Google Project Hosting

I found a GREAT little program!!!

It's over on the google.com server. It allows your ps3 to see stuff on your computer!!! You can play movies and music on your computer on your ps3! Or photos. And copy them to the PS3 HDD. :D

Now you can do the same thing with something like Windows Media Player. But that's often hard to get it to work right.

This program installs easily. then you run it. And you select what folder you want the ps3 to see. Then it does the rest. Next thing you know, you see a icon on your ps3, a little white square with a green triangle. Click on it and you can instantly see your computer files!

    REALLY SUPER COOL!!!

And one additional really impressive little feature I saw.... I have anime. And some is raw with out any subtitles in the video. BUT I created subtitles myself which were stored next to the video in .ass format. (yeah, lousy choice of names for a format). Well, the media server program loaded up my video WITH the seperate subtitle file! So I got my subtitles on my japanese anime!! HUZzAH!

And when I turned off the media player program, it shut off the connection. And my pc is safe and secure.

LOL! have a goodnight's sleep, Hopps!

btw, I just played a matroska .mkv movie file with embedded subtitles and h264 1920x1080 off of the media server. The movie sits on my pc hard drive. But it played through my ps3 onto my nice big screen tv. No stutters or sudden stops or shearing. Video played as perfect as a bluray. But I never moved the file to my ps3. It played perfect from pc to ps3 to my tv!

    :D

It also worked on a .flv file. But I don't have many of those. Most of my flv's are older youtube rips before I could rip mp4 from them.

    :D

LOL..That is the Media Server I was going to recommend you FF. :p Well, at least you found out and install it your self and try it out. Glad you like the stream from PC to PS3 and watch it on your big LCD TV. :) It certainly beat watching it on a small 19" LCD PC monitor that's for sure or the PS3 doesn't read any HD .mkv files and only reads MP4 and AVI files. That is what I use and it certainly worth the effort to install it and try it out. :)

As well it reads DVDISO file too, .srt external subs etc, as well it transcode certain unplayable files too. I have recommended this to Recca as well so he can alleviate watching the stuff I burn for him on his Mac and stream it to his PS3 and watch it on his TV.

I prefer to not install anything on my ps3 , until sony makes the first wave of bans to those ps3 hackers and modders.

Burro, you don't have to install anything on the ps3. This is a program that runs on your pc or mac. When its on, your ps3 can see your pc and access pictures, videos and music. And it can copy them to the HDD. OR it can play the file while it sits on the computer without downloading any data. It streams the music/video/picture.

    Works beautifully.

I do most of that quite effectively through the Windows Media Player. You just have to set up the file sharing parameters appropriately. I love being able to play all the mp3's from my PC through the PS3 that's hooked up to a great sound system.

Now, if only I could read the files on the PS3 from the PC. That would certainly make it easier to edit and post photos, and back up game files. Currently, I either transfer them by USB flash drive or upload pics from the PS3 Photo Gallery to Picasa.

There is another Media Server which you can use, but mostly good for Xbox 360 is call TVersity. Yep, PS3 Media Server streaming the non-proprietary video extension such as .mkv and other nonPS3 friendly video extension file certainly alleviate the need to convert the original HD content as well save your PS3 HDD space for gaming and use the PC for media storage.

I tried using that. But wasn't happy with the lack of controls there. Like how do you shut it OFF? It's very counter intuitive.

For people looking for an easier to use program, I would recommend ps3 media server over usiing Window's Media Player. it's easier to set up. Easier to configure. Easier to shut down.
