Two things that would go a long way to help is that if private messages and group invites were restricted to people on your friends list. These two things alone are getting very annoying in home.
Make it 4 things: I believe if you put someone on ignore they should completely disappear from your sight. A lot of times when people are ignored they know it and they will still use their avatars to be annoying by getting in your face and doing things. (Dances, posses, running through the group, etc.) Plus, even though you cant see what they're writing you know they're sayin somethin. The 4th would be a larger friends list so we can do dranke's suggestions.
