Most probably it's going to be a M$ vs Sony thing.
Everything M$ is good, everything Sony is evil advertising.

Although they are leading in US, they have been losing ground in most of the rest of the world.
Xbox 360 in Japan is getting close to dead.
I believe they are getting desperate considering world sales of hardware and games are either equal or surpassed by Sony.
The limitation of the hardware have also made them moved them to focus in Kinect, and casual gaming.
They also tend to forge numbers, so I'm not really sure they really have the support base we think they have.

I don't like VG since their source is somewhat unreliable, but here's one thing that they done for their latest NPD.

Michael Pachter did tell me in email however that much of the X360 year over year rise came from a) free X360s given away with Windows 7, and b) X360s sold directly to distributors (some of these units apparently ended up in Brazil) - and Microsoft convinced NPD to count both. Pachter didn't have figures on how many units those promotions added, but estimates that X360 would have dropped slightly year over year (-5% to -10%) without those inclusions.

It's a tiny thing to read so much into, however, if there is any meat to this, I would guess Microsoft see's Sony's plans to establish the smartphone as a gaming platform as a threat and they're trying the "embrace and extend" Trojan horse again. Microsoft is freaked out about their loss of market share in smartphones. Buying Nokia was an act of desperation, not strength.

Obviously nothing is going to happen since it's sony-microsoft.com

If they really are teaming up microsoft would be too arrogant to allow their name to be used second.

Sony have been known to partner up to go after a market you imagine these two together in the gaming market going after nintendo, they wont be teaming up on the pc and phone market as both companies have other partners or companies they have bought in these areas unless Microsoft are going into tv dvds etc probably someone buying domain name speculating they could sell it on though like 21st century fox was bought in the 90s hopeing 20 th century fox would pay big money for it in the year 2000

Microsoft-Sony Domain Registrations a "Defensive Hold" - News

Microsoft went and registered some rather strange domain names the other day, both containing the name 'Sony.' The mystery was not so much solved as it was half-explained by corporate communications lead Frank X. Shaw, calling the move a "defensive" one.

Posting on Twitter in response to the "microsoft-sony.com" and "sony-microsoft.com" domains, Shaw wrote: "re: sony/ms domain names: Sony = great MS partner. No scoop here, this was just a defensive domain hold. Let's move on to weekend, kay? :)"

Still doesn't really explain an awful lot, but then again with all the hoo-hah surrounding Activision's own domain name woes it stands to reason that Microsoft might want to protect any URLs that it may want to use in the future. Still though, Sony? Our bets are on Windows Phone 7-related announcements.

It would be like the Yankees and Red Sox merging and being best buddies. I wont hold my breath.
