Gaming companies using Online access pass code, Your thoughts

EA THQ Warner Bros & Codemasters implementing online pass code to access the multi-player feature of their games. It pretty much says screw you if you can't afford a new copy of any of their game titles that has multi-player.

Wow, that's just crazy it seems like pointless to have codes for playing online.

Due to higher cost of making games, increase of piracy and more stores selling used games, game developers needs a way to make money and and pay for their employees and maintain their online servers. I believe it's understandable.

somewhat but what about the people who do actually buy the used games because they don't have enough money to pay full price. and I thought DLC add-ons and then creating content through other media was a great way to make money.

Could wait when the price goes down, or wait till it releases the greatest hits/goty or so. I do agree some games aren't worth the money and should be priced lower, but I don't like the DLC method to be the majority to make money. I see some game companies starting to release a half done game and make the rest as DLC and pay us more to make it as a full game. Some companies are starting to experimenting this method and I hope it fails big time. If I paid full price for a game I expect to enjoy at least 95% from it (I leave the other 5% for dlc, if it becomes larger than that I say fail, unless the dlc is free)

Completely agree, the least should be 95% it would make no sense that the game is 40% and the rest is DLC, paying 60 then buying at the least 2.99 worth of DLC(which I've rarely seen lately) then adding if you really love the game and wanting to buy products from it at other areas like home, or RL merchandise, and sometimes the alternate editions like Street fighter, Super street fighter, and Super street fighter Arcade edition. But like you said it's all a way for them to make money which at times is completely understandable, yet when is to much enough.

I understand game companies has to make money because of increase of piracy and more stores selling used games. What do they expect when they're shelling out games with less features & content for $60 a game then throw in a shabby multi-player, they'd feel a little different if alot more gamers had the wait for the GOTY edition or lower price state of mind. Do you think those games are worth keeping now? Why is part 2 or 3 of this game has less content then part 1. I hated the idea of DLC, no unlockables anymore for completing a game now you have to buy them. Companies rush out sloppy unfinished products & tell us we have to pay $60 for it then we wait for patch after patch to fix problems they should have fixed before the game was released. As you said Elmo-JO i've rarely seen DLC worth the price now & days. Do you know how much the DLC is for FalloutNewVegas, $9 each.

The 5th company using Online pass code requirements

If You Purchase Rockstar's L.A. Noire Pass You'll Get Access To All Of The Game's DLC.Rockstar?s announced its ?Pass? service for L.A. Noire this afternoon, a nifty method of keeping the primarily single-player title out of used game stores. The service will essentially allow players to ?pre-purchase? all of L.A. Noire?s upcoming DLC for $10. The content will still be available a la carte, but will cost you 50% more that way.

Rockstar pass is completely different from online pass, I for one kinda like the idea that you're getting all the DLC much cheaper though of course you are pre-paying before you really know what's in the DLC but in this case I wanted all of it anyway and will be buying the pass the first opportunity I get

Yea it's different & without the online pass RockStar's DLC is like $4.00 which is still cheaper then a few other games charging $10.00 for each DLC for their games. I still don't like the online pass code requirements but this makes it a little more easier to take.

I was thinking since LA Noir & RockStar's version of the online pass seems better then the other online passes, if it's adopted by other companies how big will the drop in DLC be. Will companies like EA even try it? because they're against gamestop selling used copies of their games & RockStar's online pass idea doesn't hurt the gamers & helps keeps their games from being sold used. Would EA say screw putting a decent effort into DLC the gamers are getting it cheaper now So we'll give them cheap quality DLC ?

PSN Pass is Real, Required to Play Resistance 3 Online

Sony to adopt an online pass model for first-party PS3 games with online functionality.Confirming speculation from yesterday after a PS3 bundle image showed its logo, Sony has announced that Resistance 3 will ship with something called PSN Pass. It's essentially Sony's version of the online pass we've seen other publishers use for their games in the past. It'll be "game-specific" and included with first-party PS3 games that have "online capabilities." "We are always evaluating new programs for our online offering, and starting with Resistance 3 this September, we will be instituting a network pass program for PS3 games with online capabilities," a spokesperson said in statement sent to IGN. "This program will be game-specific. Games that are a part of this program will include a single-use registration code that grants the account holder redeeming the code full online access for that title.

I'm against the online passes but I can see both sides and would like to play devil's advocate here (present the opposing side of the argument, which I can sympathise with and understand, despite not actually sharing their views). Here goes:

    ---
Can't afford new games? Well, you may not be able to afford the ones that just came out but what about older ones? The other week I picked up a boxed colelctors edition of Aliens vs Predator, complete with face hugger model and all the other gubbins for just £11 in HMV, for example.

Sure, we'd all like the latest games as soon as they come out, but prices drop over time and once the game is old enough it will eventually hit your price bracket, especially if ordered online where prices are even better. It needn't be second hand, just old. That way the game company get reallisitic sales figures rather than three people owning the same copy over time, and the game company also make more money for their efforts too instead of the second hand sales money all going to the shop, who did nothing to make the game!

This is how capitalism works. We earn money according to the amount of work and effort we provide to society and this money can then be used to choose the rewards for our labour. If you can't afford the latest games on release then it is because you haven't provded enough benefit to society for society to reward you with such luxuries. I'd like a brand new mansion, but I can't afford one so I don't get one. That doesn't mean that I complain about how unfair the current mansion situation is and demand that somebody sell me their old one cheaply!

You get what you deserve and have earned. If you want more, work harder, or learn to accept older products at reduced prices as befits your lowly station in this world!
    ---

    There, how did I do?

I can see their side of things, I really can. As I said though, I am personally against the online passes as they clearly restrict our individual freedom to sell our own possessions. Once I own a product it should be mine to do with as I wish.

Please, please don't take the above devil's advocate section as my actual views, I was just messing around.

We pay for overpriced DLC, $60.00 a game $54.00 a controller, used or renting games is the only break we can get from the high cost of our gaming enjoyment & the game companies wanna take that away. Screw em, you charge me for an Online Pass then i'll buy less DLC, that's a fair trade.

You get what you deserve and have earned? So whenever we pay $60.00 for a game we deserve lack luster content ? Marvel vs Cacom 3 felt as full & complete a game as Marvel vs Cacom2 ? How about any $60.00 game where the unlockable rewards, costumes weapons characters etc. are downloadable content. How much content do you get in a $60.00 game without the DLC ? Do we deserve that ? Do we deserve paying $60.00 for games like DC universe online then pay $20.00 a month JUST TO PLAY IT & now sony adds an in game store with items only available if you spend more money on getting them, Do we deserve to be look at like our hard earned isn't enough for a decent game? I say it's nice to find a used copy or rent every now & then.

PSN Pass unlikely to make Sony money, says Pachter

Online access pass code, Your thoughts, May 23, 2011, 2:24 AM, YourPSHome.net, 2708
Industry analyst Michael Pachter has spoken out against the PlayStation 3's new PSN pass, claiming that it's not been introduced at the right time, and is unlikely to make Sony any money."PSN Pass is not timed particularly well. Curious if they make any money off this, I expect not," the Wedbush analyst said in a Tweet. Similar to EA's Online Pass system, PSN Pass offers a single-use code to unlock full access to the online features of a particular game. Resistance 3 has been confirmed as the first title to use the pass, but more will follow.

    Ubisoft formally announces Uplay Passport

Online access pass code, Your thoughts, May 23, 2011, 2:24 AM, YourPSHome.net, 2708
Electronic Arts has it. THQ has it. Warner Bros. has it. Hell, even Sony has it. What?s it, you ask? Answer: an online pass network program. Now, Ubisoft is entering the fray with Uplay Passport, its own version of the program. It?s going to be debuted in August with Driver: San Franciscoand will be added to ?many of Ubisoft?s popular core games? moving forward. As should now be understood, the Uplay Passport will be bundled with new copies of Driver: San Francisco, with those without the Passport needing to pay $9.99 to get it and gain access to online play. So, if you?re in the market for the complete version of this and future games (?bonus content, exclusive offers? also promised), this is going to be the only way to get it.
