Sony Offering Free Sony Offering Free ‘AllClear ID Plus’ Identity Theft Protection in the United States through Debix, Inc. + Posted by Patrick Seybold // Sr. Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media Last weekend, Sony Computer Entertainment announced that we will provide complimentary enrollment in an identity theft protection program. Here are the details of this program for PlayStation Network and Qriocity account holders in the United States only. We are working to make similar programs available in other countries/territories where applicable. Information will be posted on local websites/blogs when available. Sony Computer Entertainment and Sony Network Entertainment International have made arrangements with Debix, Inc., one of the industry’s most reputable identity protection firms, to offer AllClear ID Plus at no cost to PlayStation Network and Qriocity account holders for 12 months from the time an account holder registers for the program. Please note that we will start sending out activation emails for this program over the next few days, and you will have until June 18th to sign-up and redeem your code. You will need to sign up directly through AllClearID, not on Sony’s websites, and details, including step-by-step instructions for the program, will be emailed to United States PSN and Qriocity Account holders soon. The details of the program include, but are not limited to: Cyber monitoring and surveillance of the Internet to detect exposure of an AllClear ID Plus customer’s personal information, including monitoring of criminal web sites and data recovered by law enforcement. If his/her personal information is found, the customer will be alerted by phone and/or email and will be provided advice and support regarding protective steps to take. The customer will also receive monthly identity status reports. Debix works with an alliance of cyber-crime experts from the government, academia and industry to provide these services. Priority access to licensed private investigators and identity restoration specialists. If an AllClear ID Plus customer receives an alert, or otherwise suspects that he/she may be the victim of identity theft, the customer can speak directly, on a priority basis, with an on-staff licensed private investigator, who will conduct a comprehensive inquiry. In the case of an identity theft, the customer can work with an identity restoration specialist to contact creditors and others, and take necessary steps to restore the customer’s identity. A $1 million identity theft insurance policy per user to provide additional protection in the event that an AllClear ID Plus customer becomes a victim of identity theft. This insurance would provide financial relief of up to $1 million for covered identity restoration costs, legal defense expenses, and lost wages that occur within 12 months after the stolen identity event. More information will be available on the enrollment page, a link which will be included in the email you will receive. We continue to work around the clock to have some PlayStation Network services and Qriocity services restored, and will be providing you specific details shortly.
I'm looking forward to that. I wonder how they will work it. Will they give EVERY account access to free identity theft protection? Or will they check for credit cards? ^^; Cause I got more than one account. And well... can I register a familiy member under a different acct?
US only? Phhooeeyy..LOL..I wish Sony Canada can do something for us users with the AllClear ID Plus. Only time will tell and I guess may be we didn't get affected with the whole account stolen so might take a while to get this going for us in Canada.
Let's say you used this, but needed someone to help get a certain item during your vacation trip? Would this work or will it suddenly boot the other person off?
Well, each country has different laws to be followed, he stated other regions will be dealt with as well, hopefully there will be something for you up there in Canada as they deal with the process.
Sounds like one of those shifty "credit protection" plans they try to sell you for credit cards. They're free for a while (12 months in this case) and then you pay a monthly fee to keep the service. I'd guess that most credit cards offer the customer similar levels of protection for free. I'll probably pass on this one. It's just another entity to which you're handing over your private information.
I'm wondering how this will work. I think many of us have already changed our credit cards. So the numbers won't match. ...
Some info here...https://www.allclearid.com/ It looks like they offer a free plan already, presumably one level below the "Plus" plan.
Looks like they are getting close to offering this protection to users in the EU as well. Update On Identity Protection Scheme – PlayStation.Blog.Europe ___ Posted on 6 May by Nick Caplin – Head of Communications, SCEE Update On Identity Protection Scheme As you will have read in the letter from Sir Howard Stringer, that we posted a few hours ago, in the US we are offering all PSN users one year’s free access to an identity protection scheme. I can assure you that here in the SCEE region, we are working incredibly hard to offer you something very similar. As is often the case here, with so many countries in our region, this is a very complicated thing to achieve, but we are close. Please keep an eye on the blog as we hope to be able to announce something about this very soon.
Ahh - so it is only a one year subscription to this service. Me thinks I will pass on this one. I don't trust those one year plans. JPConway
Yeah, I was question about it my self why is it only 1 year but not for until PS3 becomes obsolete or transfer/renewal to PS4 etc. 1 year it doesn't make any sense, plus it sounds Sony doesn't care about its client whom they are look out for and protect. It would be funny after 1 year of the AllClear ID Plus is done and Sony is asking you to pay for the additional anti-theft year service.
Is it really an offer if you have to get sued on behalf of millions to even consider it? Blegh... this whole thing is bothersome.
It's for Identity Theft protection therefore you only need to sign up once per (real) person (not per account). Of course, the identity theft protection company will try their hardest to get you to re-up your subscription at the end of the free year. That's their livelyhood. Then it's your responsibility to stop them from charging you or you can agree to additional service(s). But Sony has work out a deal to pay them a prefered rate because Sony screwed up and wants to save face, lawsuits and Federal fines. I am going to wait and "feel" it out. Since identity theft usually occurs 12 to 18 months after a hack, if at all, it might be best to wait a bit? Also, if you read about these companies (Consumer's Report? IDK?) you would probably read that it's cheaper to pay for credit checks on your own and to keep close tabs on your "stuff", but since it's going to be free for the first year I'm going to concider it. I believe I have time to think about it. Best Wishes to All.
Oh, I got my replacement MC in the mail today and I'm sort of anxious to try adding 3000 yen to my wallet via the PSN Store only because I can. I think that the service charge would still be $1.50 US. I can't wait to try. ;D I'm not joking.
